Humanitas: Arte, Mitologia e Metafísica

 

     É com enorme prazer que anunciamos o colóquio Humanitas: Arte, Mitologia e Metafísica a ter lugar na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL), nos dias 23, 24 e 25 de novembro de 2023.

    A abrangência temática deste evento filosófico encontra a sua unidade no pressuposto metafísico de que “o fundamento da razão não é, ele próprio, racional” (2006: 11). Ou seja, de que existe uma relação imediata entre o pensamento objetivo-lógico-empírico e a atualização do pensamento mitológico. Com efeito, terá sido a propensão humana para ver o que não é verdade e querer o que (ainda) não existe que serviu de estímulo permanente ao seu desenvolvimento. Dotados da capacidade de criar os seus próprios artefactos e semióticas coletivas, os seres humanos reificaram as suas crenças, hipostasiaram as suas verdades, concretizaram as suas ilusões no decorrer da história da sua evolução. Não devemos, assim, descurar a presença recorrente da mitologia no âmbito dos estudos da cultura, da epistemologia, da ética, da estética e da filosofia de arte.

     O mito estabelece, portanto, uma ambiguidade entre o imaginário e o real: se, por um lado, nele prevalece o fantástico e o absurdo, também é verdade que ativamente procura dar significação às experiências mais básicas da vida humana. Se assim é, a mitologia pode ser muito primitiva em termos de conhecimento, mas rica em termos de significação. Daí Cassirer considerar que não devemos definir o humano através da propriedade da racionalidade, mas antes pela capacidade de atribuir significado às coisas, a qual poderá ser, do ponto de vista da história da evolução cognitiva humana, temporalmente prioritária ao pensamento lógico-formal.

     Deve, no entanto, esclarecer-se que não é do nosso interesse perpetuar a narrativa já tradicionalmente consolidada que opõe razão e imaginação, mas, antes sim, reconhecer as condições pré-teóricas e pré-racionais que possibilitam a atualização do pensamento racional. É neste sentido que em todas as comunicações será possível descobrir a articulação que se presta entre “a experiência da razão no pensamento humano” e a “‘palavra mito’ como expressão relevante do nosso espírito” (2006: 12). Tomando ainda em consideração que, muito embora não seja possível isolar a razão das suas condições de elaboração, também não nos é simplesmente permitido reduzi-la a essas condições.  Mito e razão, significação e conhecimento continuam a não denotar o mesmo, a despeito de as suas fronteiras inevitavelmente se cruzarem. A arte constitui, finalmente, a união perfeita entre estes dois polos só aparentemente antitéticos, funcionando como fator de resistência à total racionalização instrumental do mundo, sem cair no irracionalismo. Reconhecemos, então, à arte o estatuto de uma “nova mitologia”. “Nova” porque mais aberta à discussão, interpretação e crítica. “Mitologia” porque desempenha um papel fundamental na expressão e na compreensão da condição humana que continua a distinguir-se das predominantes ferramentas de análise metodológica, objetiva e mensurável.

Humanitas: Art, Mythology and Metaphysics

 

     We are pleased to announce the  Humanitas: Art, Mythology and Metaphysics colloquium, to be held at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of November 2023. The thematic diversity of this philosophical event finds its unit on the assumption that “the foundation of reason is not itself rational.” (2006:11) In other words, there is an immediate relationship between objective-logical-empirical thinking and the occurrence of mythological thinking. Indeed, the human propensity to see what is not true and to want what does not (yet) exist served as a permanent stimulus to its development. Capable of creating their own artifacts and collective semiotics, human beings reified their beliefs, hypostatized their truths, and materialized their illusions throughout their evolution. We should not, therefore, neglect the recurrent presence of mythology in the context of studies of culture, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of art.                Myth, therefore, establishes an ambiguity between our imaginary and reality itself. If, on the one hand, the fantastic and the absurd prevail, it is also true that it actively seeks to give meaning to the most basic experiences of human life. If so, mythology can be very primitive regarding knowledge but rich in meaning. Cassirer argues that we should not define humanity by the property of rationality but rather by the ability to attribute meaning to things, which can be, from the point of view of the history of human cognitive evolution, temporally prior to logical-formal reasoning.

       However, our interest is not to perpetuate the already consolidated narrative that opposes reason and imagination but rather to recognize the pre-theoretical and pre-rational conditions that make rational thought possible. That is the reason why, in all the talks, it will be possible to unveil the articulation between “the experience of reason in human thought” and “the ‘myth word’ as a relevant expression of our spirit.” (2006:12) It is also worth noting that, despite not isolating reason from its elaboration conditions, we cannot simply reduce it to these conditions. Myth and reason, meaning and knowledge still do not denote the same thing despite their borders inevitably crossing. In this regard, Art constitutes the perfect union between these two only apparently antithetical poles, working as a factor of resistance to the generalized instrumental rationalization of the world without nevertheless falling into irrationalism.  We then conceive Art as a “new mythology”. “New” in the sense that it is more open to discussion, interpretation, and criticism. “Mythology” since it plays a fundamental role in the expression and understanding of human condition that is still different from the predominant tools of methodological, objective, and measurable analysis.
