2019/3 – Philosophy of memory
Extended deadline for this CfP: 06 October 2019
This special issue of Voluntas investigates the topic of memory from a broad variety of perspectives: historical and thematic, ancient and modern, a priori and a posteriori.
The puzzle of the experience of the past in the present is a classical philosophical topic that continues to inspire philosophers.
Nowadays, due to new empirical discoveries and to new social challenges, the philosophy of memory is thriving for at least two reasons. On the one hand, new ideas in cognitive psychology and the neurosciences open the opportunity to think again about the distinction between memory and imagination, the requirement of truth in memory and the relationship between memory and knowledge. On the other hand, new political phenomena from the 20th century made it necessary to discuss the relationship between forgetfulness and responsibility—and the duty to remember.
We invite submissions on any aspect of the current philosophical debate on memory. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:
– The metaphysics of memory
– Memory, time, and persons
– Epistemological issues regarding memory
– Memory and mental content
– Varieties of remembering
– Interdisciplinarity in the study of memory
– Collective memory
– Construction and reconstruction in remembering
– The phenomenology of memory
– Situated, embedded, and extended memory
Contributions from philosophers (working in any area of philosophy) and empirical researchers (psychologists, neuroscientists, etc.) are most welcome.
Admitted languages: English, French, Portuguese, Spanish.
Edited by César Schirmer dos Santos and Tiegue Vieira Rodrigues
