Resumo:

Se reconstruye la teoría fisiológica, tomando como punto de partida las experiencias inaugurales realizadas por Claude Bernard — su ejemplar paradigmático — mediante una versión modificada de la concepción estructuralista de teorías, que la caracteriza por sus ejemplares, no por sus modelos, como ocurre en la visión standard. Se mantiene la distinción estructuralista entre los elementos no teóricos y los teóricos, y se establecen las relaciones entre los distintos ejemplares de la fisiología y de éstos con otras teorías biomédicas. Posteriormente, como una consecuencia natural de la reconstrucción, se describen los mecanismos de la fisiología, una vía metateórica de análisis planteada por algunos filósofos especialmente interesados en las disciplinas biomédicas. Se muestra — luego de exponer esta posición — que se obtiene una mejor comprensión del conocimiento biomédico desde el análisis estructural de sus teorías, y que centrarse únicamente en la noción de mecanismo es innecesariamente limitante.

Abstract:

We reconstruct physiological theory starting from the initial experiences of Claude Bernard — its paradigmatic exemplar — using a modified version of the structuralistic conception of theories, which characterises them by its exemplars, and not by its models, as it happens in the standard version. We preserve the structuralistic distinction between non theoretical and theoretical elements, and we stablish the relationships between the different exemplars of physiology, and between them and the exemplars of biomedical theories. After that, and as a natural consequense of the reconstruction, we describe the mechanisms of physiology, a metatheoretical analytical approach proposed by some philosophers particularly interested in biomedical disciplines. We will argue — after exposing such position — that a better understanding of biomedical knowledge is obtained by the structural analysis of its theories, and that focusing only on the notion of mechanism is unnecessarily limiting.
